BaZi (八字) means “eight characters.” The eight characters come from four pairs of traditional calendar symbols connected with the year, month, day, and hour of birth. Each pair is called a pillar, which is why BaZi is also known as Four Pillars, Four Pillars of Destiny, or Four Pillars astrology.

BaZi belongs to the broader field often described in English as Chinese astrology or Chinese metaphysics. It is not the same as the twelve-animal Chinese zodiac: the zodiac animal uses only the birth year, while a BaZi chart uses four time coordinates and their relationships.

Every pillar combines a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Together, the four stems and four branches create the chart’s eight visible characters. A complete interpretation also considers season, hidden stems, relationships among branches, and timing cycles.

The Day Master and Five Elements

The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is called the Day Master. It gives the reading a reference point. The rest of the chart is interpreted in relation to it through the Five Elements, or Wu Xing: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

These are not chemical substances. They are traditional categories for describing processes and relationships: growth, expression, stability, structure, and flow. A BaZi reading looks at whether these patterns are supported, excessive, absent, transformed, or in tension. “Balance” does not mean that every chart should contain exactly twenty percent of each element.

Why birth time and birthplace matter

Birth time determines the hour pillar, which changes approximately every two hours in the traditional system. Birthplace helps establish the local time context. When a recorded birth time is uncertain, a responsible reader should say so and avoid pretending that the hour pillar is exact.

Solar and lunar dates also need careful handling. BaZi calculations are closely connected with the traditional sexagenary calendar and solar terms. Users should provide the calendar type shown on their original record instead of guessing a conversion.

What can a BaZi reading be used for?

People commonly use BaZi as a structured language for self-reflection. A reading may discuss temperament, communication style, work preferences, relationship patterns, personal rhythms, and traditional timing themes. It can help someone frame better questions, but it cannot guarantee an event or replace professional judgment.
